INTRODUCTION
We are delighted that so many talented artists choose to exhibiting their work at art in the nave so that art lovers can to view a wide selection of excellent paintings, sculpture, textiles, glass, ceramics, silverware and handmade jewellery. Every artist brings their own unique perspectives and artistic interpretations to compliment the artistry and craftsmanship of the magnificent Norman building as it has been expressed down the centuries.
When it was built during the middle of the 12th century it quickly became the focal point for a growing community that we now know as the Old Town in Hemel Hempstead. People gathered here to worship and share news, to celebrate and commiserate, to bargain, barter and make deals and, of course, to eat, drink and build up the common life of the area. All life is explored and depicted in art and when we come face-to-face with great art it speaks to us in a special way and invigorates our souls.
We are so very fortunate to have the support of so many voluteers who work so hard to make this event possible, including our artists, advertisers, charities and local community organisations who have supported the organising committee working with St Mary and St Paul PCC.
Our many visitors who enjoy this event are made welcome and their presence is greatly appreciated.
THE VENUE
St Mary’s Church stands at the heart of the Old Town of Hemel Hempstead, just off the High Street in the Old Town. Its tall and elegant lead spire makes it unmistakable. It has been a place of worship for over 850 years and provides a real focus as a centre of spirituality and history in a new town most of whose history goes back barely fifty years. We are a traditional church with Hertfordshire champion bellringers, we have regular baptisms and conduct funeral services. St Mary's Church is a popular venue for wedding services for the local churches in our benifice.
St Mary's Church Hemel Hempstead is at the heart of the whole community whole. It lends itself to cultural events, music, drama, exhibitions and is a fascinating visual aid for school pupils to use in pursuit of many aspects of the national curriculum. In all these ways we seek to play our part in sustaining the human spirit.
St Mary's Church is a listed building, but is also buillding which is in current and constant use and supports a living community.
